Tehri Dam is situated at the confluence of which rivers ?

Tehri dam present in the Uttarakhand state is regarded as the highest dam in India. This dam is not only an engineering marvel for India but it was also declared as the second highest dam in Asia and 8th highest in the world. But where is the Tehri dam situated and at the confluence of which rivers? Tehri dam is situated at the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers. Bhagirathi River is one of the two headstreams of the Ganges River. It is a Himalayan river which flows in Uttarakhand. On the other hand, river Bhilangana is an important tributary of the Bhagirathi River. Tehri dam is a part of the Tehri Hydroelectric Complex.

Tehri dam is 260.5 meters (855 ft) high rock and earth-fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi River in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state. The length of the Tehri dam is 575 meters (1,886 ft), crest width is 20 meters (66 ft), and the base width is 1,128 meters (3,701 ft). Tehri dam reservoir is known as the Tehri lake and is famous for tourism activities. Tehri dam also produces hydroelectricity. With an installed capacity of 1000 MW along with an additional 1,000 MW of pumped storage hydroelectricity, this dam is one of the important electricity sources for Uttarakhand state.

The construction of the Tehri dam was started in the year 1978 and it was completed in 2006. The reservoir of Tehri dam has a capacity of 4.0 km2 while its surface area is 52 square kilometres.

Benefits of Tehri dam

Two most important benefits of Tehri dam are the provision of irrigation water and clean drinking water. You should also know that Tehri dam provides clean drinking water to more than 40 Lakhs people of Delhi and to more than 30 Lakhs people residing in areas in and around Uttar Pradesh. The second most important advantage of this dam is the supply of water for land irrigation to almost 270,000 hectares to Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi. Other benefits include less flooding in low lying areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, tourism, employment generation to local people, and availability of water in low rainfall seasons. Generation of hydroelectricity is another major benefit Tehri dam.

Tehri dam remains open all year round for tourists. Banana boat ride, jet skiing and paragliding are some major adventure sports at Tehri dam area.
