Moscow is the capital city of Russia. With a population of around 30 million it the most populous city of Russia. It also happens to be the largest city in the country as well as of the European continent in terms of area. Moscow is a significant city of Russia in terms of economy, political and cultural activities. Moscow was ranked as an alpha global city by the Globalisation and World Cities Research Network. The capital of Russia, Moscow also happens to be the coldest mega city on the earth. Mercer had ranked Moscow as the ninth most expensive city in the world.

The Russian Federation

Russia is located in North Asia. It is officially known as the Russian Federation. It is the largest country in the world as far as area is concerned. The capital of Russia, Moscow is the world’s largest metropolitan area. It has a population of 146,793,744 and covers an area of about 17,125,191 sq. km. It shares its borders with Norway, Finland, Latvia, Belarus, Poland, Azerbaijan, China, Mongolia, North Korea, Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, Estonia and Kazakhstan.

History of Russia

It was proclaimed as an empire in 1721 under Peter the Great. This was also the time when Russia became a world power. The Russian territorial power increased substantially after its victory in Great Northern War with Sweden. During this period, Saint Petersburg was established as the capital of Russia by Peter the Great.

It entered the First World War in 1914 after Austria and Hungary declared war on Russia’s ally Serbia. It is believed that this war paved the way for the Russian Revolution of 1917. The rising costs of war, high casualties, corruption and treason caused a great distrust among the people of the country on their regime. The February Revolution took place in 1917. Emperor Nicholas 2 was dethroned and was ultimately executed. The Provisional Government replaced the monarchy. The Provisional Government passed a decree on September 1, 1917, which established the Russian Republic.

A new party Bolshevik was formed under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. The increasing crisis and poverty resulted in the October Revolution in which the Provisional Government was thrown out of the power. Power was given to the Soviets (elected councils of workers and peasants). This set up the first socialist state in the world. The Bolsheviks created the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) on December 30, 1922. The USSR disintegrated in December 1991.

Economy of Russia

It is the 6th largest economy in the world in terms of purchasing power and 12th largest economy in terms of nominal GDP. It has an enormous amount of oil and natural gas. It has an abundance of natural resourced. About 80% of the total export of the country comprises of natural resources such as natural gas, oil, timber and metals. The capital of Russia is the major economic hub of the country.

Culture of Russia

The country has more than 160 ethnic groups. These include ethnic Russians, Tatars and Bashkirs, Kalmyks and Buddhist nomadic Buryats.

It has a great sports culture. The country has always been in the top four in terms of gold medals won in summer Olympics. The country has one of the best teams of gymnasts, boxers, wrestlers, shooters, skaters, fencers, weightlifters and skiers.
