He established the Portuguese Empire in the country 1534. The colonization was effected by dividing the country into parts, known as Captaincy Colonies of Brazil.

Over the period of time tension grew between the ethnic Brazilians and the Portuguese. Ultimately the country was declared independent from Portuguese rule on 7th September 1822. Prince Pedro was declared as the emperor of Brazil. Portugal officially recognized Brazil on 29 August 1825 after the Brazilian war of independence.
